Fortis makes history, reaches AFC Challenge League main round
The final whistle served as the biggest proof of how much testing Fortis FC had to endure on the path to victory. Overcoming all adversity, Fortis defeated Kyrgyzstan's club Muras United 1-0 courtesy of a lone goal by Mohammad Ibrahim. Crossing the preliminary stage of the AFC Challenge League, the Bangladeshi club has now booked its place in the tournament's main round at the very first attempt.
Kyrgyzstan is a cold-weather country, so Fortis weaponized the heat to subdue their club. Amid a temperature of 33 degrees Celsius at the Bashundhara Kings Arena, Muras could not find their rhythm. Fortis was more aggressive at the start of the match. In the 12th minute, Stephen Chukwude received a through pass from Mohammad Ibrahim. However, finding open space on the right, the Nigerian forward failed to control the ball.
An even bigger opportunity arrived in the 22nd minute. Pa Omar Babou entered the box from the left and faced the goalkeeper. As the goalkeeper advanced quickly and guarded the near post, the shooting angle narrowed. Still, Omar's shot beat the goalkeeper, but it rebounded off the post.
Omar got another chance in the 30th minute. This time, his shot went over the crossbar. Muras failed to apply much pressure on the Fortis defense during the first half, which ended in a goalless draw.
The pace of the match increased after the break. Muras initiated attacks, while Fortis searched for opportunities through counter-attacks. Amid this, the Bangladeshi team found the breakthrough in the 52nd minute. Omar advanced with the ball from near the halfway line, eluded a defender, and delivered a through pass to Ibrahim. Controlling the ball with his first touch, Ibrahim calmly took a left-footed shot. The ball slipped underneath the Muras goalkeeper's body and found the back of the net, putting Fortis ahead 1-0.
Fortis had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the 55th minute. A corner taken by Pa Omar Babou curled directly toward the goal and towards the post. Just before the ball could cross the goal line, Muras goalkeeper Orest Kostyk cleared it away. Then, Ananta Tamang cut the back pass from the rebound to Eric Bisseck. His curling shot was also brilliantly parried to the right for a corner by the Muras goalkeeper.
Muras earned a great chance to equalize in the 74th minute when the ball hit Eric Bisseck's hand inside the box, resulting in a penalty. The spot-kick taken by Atabaev Erbol beat goalkeeper Sujon, but the ball rebounded off the side post.
Afterward, Muras, who reached the semi-finals in the previous edition, kept pressure on the Fortis defense until the final whistle. However, they failed to find another goal. Holding onto their single-goal lead, Fortis finished the match.
Victory on debut in the AFC Challenge League, and with that win, a ticket to the main round—the day thus remained memorable for Fortis.
