Fresh violence has erupted in India's northeastern state of Manipur, with the situation remaining tense. The latest unrest follows allegations of arson by the Kuki community against the Meitei community on Saturday.

On July 11, a mob of over 600 people set fire to at least six houses in a Meitei village in Imphal West district. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, and several people were injured in the clashes . This incident, which took place in the Kanto Sabal area, comes after a similar arson attempt in the same location earlier in the week .

The fresh wave of violence has fueled growing animosity, particularly between the Naga and Kuki communities. This has emerged as a third and dangerous front in the state's ethnic conflict, which first erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023 .

The current phase of unrest was ignited by a minor altercation between a Naga teacher and Kuki youths in Ukhrul district in early February. The situation escalated, leading to arson and multiple abductions. In May, six Naga men were abducted, and their bodies were found in June, further inflaming tensions .

Analysts suggest that the central government is struggling to control the three-way conflict involving separatist groups, armed factions, and villagers . The instability is being further fueled by the free flow of illegal arms across the Myanmar border.

The conflict originated in 2023 when the Meitei community demanded Scheduled Tribe status, a move the Kuki community resisted over fears of losing ancestral land. The Naga community later became involved, complicating the crisis.

The long-running violence has claimed approximately 260 lives and displaced over 60,000 people, with more than 58,000 displaced in the last three years alone.
