Today marks the birth anniversary of eminent Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee, a luminous figure in Bengali cinema whose thoughtful and aesthetic performances made him a living legend. Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s famous quote — “With every good film I see, I feel reborn” — seems particularly fitting for Soumitra Chatterjee’s acting career.

Born on this day in 1935 in Krishnanagar, Soumitra was inspired to act after watching theatre performances by Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. Although he began his career as a radio announcer, his passion for theatre drew him into acting. His film journey began in 1959 with Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar, where he played the iconic role of Apu.

Soumitra acted in 14 lead roles out of the 34 films directed by Satyajit Ray. Films such as Devi, Charulata, Aranyer Din Ratri, Ashani Sanket and Hirak Rajar Deshe showcased his unmatched versatility. His portrayal of Feluda in Sonar Kella and Joi Baba Felunath earned him universal popularity, and for many viewers, Feluda remains synonymous with Soumitra Chatterjee.

Over a long career, he acted in more than 300 films, working with directors across generations, including Tapan Sinha, Mrinal Sen, Tarun Majumdar, Rituparno Ghosh, Aparna Sen and Srijit Mukherji. Even in his later years, his performances in films such as Paramitar Ekdin, Hemlock Society, Belashuru, Praktan and Sonar Pahar remained equally radiant.

Beyond cinema, theatre was his true passion. His performances in plays such as Raja Lear, Tiktiki and Ghatak Biday remain unforgettable. He was also a master of poetry recitation, and his rendition of Hotath Dekha in Praktan continues to resonate with audiences.

In recognition of his contribution, Soumitra received numerous honours, including the National Film Award, Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He was also the first Indian actor to receive France’s Legion of Honour and Order of Arts and Letters. After his death, he was honoured at the 93rd Academy Awards during the In Memoriam segment.

On his birth anniversary, Soumitra Chatterjee is remembered with deep respect as a legend who gifted Bengali cinema unforgettable characters — from Apu to Feluda — and left behind a timeless legacy of performance.
