G-7 summit begins today in France
The G-7 summit is beginning in France on Monday, June 15, following the announcement of a preliminary agreement to end the war between the United States and Iran. The summit, which will run from June 15 to 17, will see world leaders discuss the Iran situation, the Ukraine war, global economic imbalances, and ensuring the supply of critical minerals .
US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Evian-les-Bains, France, to attend the summit. On the sidelines of the summit, he will hold meetings with Middle Eastern leaders as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy .
G-7 leaders are keen to learn the details of the US-Iran agreement. Although a memorandum of understanding is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on Friday, the terms of the agreement have not yet been disclosed .
Trump has announced that the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas transport, will reopen from Friday. He has also said the US blockade of Iranian ports will be withdrawn.
According to a statement from the secretariat of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, will end permanently starting on Monday night. Additionally, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has said that broader negotiations, including on sanctions relief, will continue during a 60-day ceasefire period.
The summit is also significant for French President Emmanuel Macron as a diplomatic platform. Addressing global economic imbalances is a key focus of the discussions, and Brazil, India, Kenya and South Korea have been invited to participate in the talks.
