The Netherlands finally broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when star forward Cody Gakpo finished brilliantly from inside the box to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead against Morocco. After a goalless first half, the Netherlands increased their attacking intensity in the second half. Despite Morocco enjoying the majority of possession with 61 per cent, managing nine shots and four on target, they failed to find the net. The Netherlands, on the other hand, scored from just their third shot on target. With Gakpo's goal, the Dutch are now very close to securing a place in the last 16. However, with time still remaining, Morocco will continue to fight with all their strength to level the score.
