GCC warns Iran to immediately stop attacks
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has issued a stern warning to Iran to stop military attacks to protect security and stability in the Middle East.
Following an emergency meeting on Sunday (March 1), the six-member bloc—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait—released the statement.
The meeting noted that Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks have damaged civilian and residential areas in member states, constituting a violation of international law, reports BBC.
The GCC warned that it would take strong measures if necessary to safeguard its security and sovereignty.
Tensions in the region escalated after a joint US-Israeli military operation in Iran on Saturday (February 28), which targeted several cities including Tehran and resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In retaliation, Iran launched missile strikes targeting Israeli and US military bases.
The GCC called on the international community to play an effective role in reducing instability. Member states have also strengthened their defense systems.
Military analysts warn that the ongoing regional tensions carry the risk of a larger-scale conflict.
