Gen Z protests topple Madagascar govt
Madagascar’s government has collapsed following mass protests led by Gen-Z against electricity and water shortages. President Andry Rajoelina announced the dissolution of the government in a televised address on Monday.
Apologising for the government’s failure, Rajoelina said, “If members of my administration have not fulfilled their responsibilities, we accept it and express regret.” He pledged support for businesses affected during the unrest, acknowledging people’s suffering caused by disrupted utilities.
The protests, which began on September 25 in the capital Antananarivo, spread to eight cities. Although Rajoelina had dismissed the energy minister for negligence, demonstrators demanded the resignation of the president and his cabinet.
On Monday, thousands again took to the streets, prompting Rajoelina to announce the dismissal of the prime minister and the dissolution of the government. Applications for a new prime minister will be accepted within three days, followed by the formation of a new cabinet.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the security forces’ “unnecessary use of force”, reporting at least 22 deaths and 100 injuries. He said protesters were subjected to arrests, beatings, rubber bullets, tear gas, and live rounds.
