Germany, Ivory Coast face off tonight; German coach wary of opponents
After a record-breaking start to their World Cup campaign, Germany face a new challenge on Saturday night as they take on African powerhouse Ivory Coast in their second Group E match at 2:00 am Bangladesh time.
German coach Julian Nagelsmann is determined to avoid complacency against the fast and attack-minded Ivorians. Speaking at a press conference in Toronto, Nagelsmann acknowledged the threat posed by Ivory Coast.
"Their defence is solid, and their three forwards are extremely quick. In their last match, Nicolas Pépé was unstoppable, and no defender could contain him," he said.
Nagelsmann admitted that the physical strength and pace of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winners would be a major test for his side.
Meanwhile, despite Germany's 7-1 demolition of Curacao in their opener, winger Leroy Sané's form has come under scrutiny. Nagelsmann, however, has thrown his full support behind the Galatasaray star. "I don't think criticism will affect his confidence. He just needs one good game, and we hope the next match will be that game," the coach said.
