Gill ends Babar's reign, becomes No.1 ODI batter
Indian opener Shubman Gill has become the world's top-ranked batsman in the ICC ODI rankings, ending Pakistan skipper Babar Azam's reign at the top spot since April 14, 2021.
According to the latest ODI rankings released by the ICC, Gill is number 1 with 830 points, while Babar Azam is close behind on 224 points. Gill who has had a dream run this year has been closely behind Babar in the ODI rankings all year, finally overtaking him on Wednesday and getting to the top of the ODI rankings for the first time in his career.
Gill has scored 1449 runs in 2023 at an average of 63 and a strike rate of 103.72. The young Indian batting prodigy has hit 7 centuries and 5 half-centuries during the year with a highest score of 208.
Gill's rise was not the only good news for India. Legendary batter, Kohli breached the top five on the back of his stellar show in the World Cup. In the bowler's rankings, Mohammed Siraj climbed to the top of the list for ODI bowlers on the back of his 10 wickets at the World Cup.
