Google makes Gemini smarter with simpler thinking mode

Google is rolling out new usability updates for its AI chatbot Gemini, introducing a simplified "Thinking" mode and expanded notification controls as part of its latest effort to make the platform more intuitive for users.

According to technology publication Gadgets 360, the latest update streamlines how users access Gemini's reasoning capabilities while giving them greater control over app notifications.

Previously, users had to choose a dedicated Thinking mode before submitting prompts that required deeper reasoning. Following the update, Gemini will operate in its standard mode by default, allowing users to switch to Extended Thinking only when more complex analysis is needed, technology website 9to5Google reported.

The change is designed to speed up responses to everyday queries while preserving the option for more advanced reasoning when handling multi-step or analytical tasks.

Google is also introducing a new notification management feature for the Android version of the Gemini app. Users will now be able to customize which notifications they receive—or disable them entirely—directly from the account settings menu, reducing unnecessary alerts and offering a more personalized experience.

The company said the latest enhancements are part of a broader series of improvements introduced over recent months, including updates to Gemini's interface, performance and AI capabilities.

The new features are being rolled out gradually and will become available to users across different regions in phases.
