Govt asks EC to hold referendum on election day

The interim government has sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) instructing it to prepare for holding the referendum on the same day. According to the government’s decision, the referendum must be held on the same day.

EC secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the information on Saturday, November 22.

He said the government, through its letter, stated that holding the referendum is the EC’s responsibility. The EC has been asked to hold the national election and the referendum on the same day.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin recently said further decisions regarding the referendum would be taken once formal instructions from the government were received.

It is to be noted that the EC intends to announce the schedule in the first half of December and hold the election in the first half of February.
