Govt imports 2mt of tear gas shells from India for army

The government has imported 2.03 metric tons of tear gas shells from India for use by the Bangladesh Army.

The consignment, packed in 145 wooden crates and sourced from Indian firm Narendra Explosives Limited, was unloaded at Benapole port on Thursday evening (August 6) before being transported under tight security to Jashore Cantonment in a covered van.

Benapole port's warehouse inspector, Shahadat Hossain, said the shipment was safely unloaded and escorted by a six-member Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) team from the port to Sharsha. From Sharsha to Jashore Cantonment, security responsibility was handed over to a Bangladesh Army delegation.

Port sources said the tear gas shells will be transferred from Jashore Cantonment to the Bangladesh Ordnance Factory (BOF) in Rajendrapur, Gazipur, on August 9.

Rubel Amin, officer-in-charge (OC) at Benapole port, also confirmed the consignment's safe unloading and its arrival at Jashore Cantonment.
