Panama are once again taking the field with the aim of proving their worth in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This Central American team has carved out a distinct identity in international football through consistent improvement over the past few years. With a mentality to fight against strong teams and team cohesion, Panama is no longer overlooked as a small team. They are currently ranked 45th in the FIFA rankings. Although they are not favourites for the World Cup, they have the ability to put pressure on tough opponents. Their main goal in this World Cup will be to play competitive football in the group stage and stay in contention for reaching the knockout stage.

World Cup record and participation

Panama first participated in the World Cup in 2018. In the Russia World Cup, they played against England, Belgium and Tunisia. Although they lost all three matches and were eliminated in the group stage, the memory of scoring their first ever World Cup goal holds a special place in Panama's football history. The experience of that tournament has made the team more confident. Under current coach Thomas Christiansen, Panama is playing organised and fighting football. Their consistent performances in the CONCACAF region in recent times have further boosted their confidence.

Strengths

Panama's greatest strengths are their team cohesion and fighting mentality. The players are physically strong and attempt to keep opponents under pressure throughout the match. Organised football in defence and intense pressing in midfield are among their biggest characteristics. Panama can also be dangerous from set-pieces. Additionally, they have the ability to catch opponents off guard through quick counter-attacks. Their fearlessness against big teams is a major strength.

Weaknesses

Panama's main weakness is a lack of experience in world-class major tournaments. The absence of a consistent goal-scorer in attack troubles the team. They often lose ball control against strong and technical teams. Additionally, occasional lack of coordination in defence can be problematic against top sides. Inefficiency in capitalising on created opportunities is also a major challenge for Panama.

Key players

Panama have several important players. Captain Aníbal Godoy plays for Nashville SC, leading the team in midfield. Forward José Fajardo plays for Universidad Católica in Ecuador, playing an important role in attack. Midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla is a member of Houston Dynamo. Defender Eric Davis plays for Cartaginés in Costa Rica, bringing experience to the defence. Goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera is also a reliable figure for the team.

Group opponents and prospects

Panama are in Group L of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Their opponents are England, Croatia and Ghana. Although England and Croatia are relatively stronger teams in this group, Panama will aim to compete and put up a fight. The match against Ghana could be the most important for them. If they maintain team cohesion and defensive solidity, Panama will try to spring a surprise in this World Cup.
