The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former national captain Habibul Bashar as the new chief selector of the Bangladesh men’s cricket team.

The board announced the decision officially on Sunday (February 22).

The move comes as the two-year contract of incumbent chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu expires later this month. Lipu opted not to renew his contract due to personal reasons and had informed the board in advance, prompting the BCB to begin the search for a successor.

Following the selection process, the board entrusted Bashar with the top role. He previously served as a selector for the Bangladesh men’s national team from 2016 until February 2024. Prior to that, he was also involved in the women’s national selection panel.

Although he stepped down from the men’s selection panel in February 2024, Bashar’s extensive experience in talent identification and team building has led to his return in a leadership capacity. He is currently serving as the programme coordinator of the BCB’s Game Development Committee.
