Hajj 2025 officially begins as millions of pilgrims gather in Mina
The sacred journey of Hajj has officially begun today (June 4) with the arrival of pilgrims in Mina on the 8th of Zilhaj.
According to Saudi authorities, over 400,000 pilgrims have already reached the valley, marking the start of this year’s Hajj rituals. The air in Mina is filled with the resonant chants of “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik” as devotees from around the world gather in devotion.
As per Islamic tradition, pilgrims enter into the state of 'Ihram' from either Masjid al-Haram in Makkah or their residences, and then proceed to Mina, located about nine kilometers from Makkah. While many made the journey today, a significant number of pilgrims had already arrived in Mina in advance. They will spend the night here before heading to the plains of Arafat on the morning of 9 Zilhaj.
The Day of Arafah, the most significant part of Hajj, will take place tomorrow. Pilgrims will gather in Arafat where the central sermon of Hajj is delivered—a moment considered the spiritual climax and main pillar of the pilgrimage. This year, Sheikh Saleh bin Humaid, a distinguished Islamic scholar, has been appointed by King Salman bin Abdulaziz to deliver the Arafat sermon.
Approximately 1.5 million pilgrims are expected to perform Hajj this year. The Saudi government has implemented extensive security and logistical measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims.
The core Hajj rituals will continue through 13 Zilhaj, during which pilgrims will visit several sacred sites including Muzdalifah and Jamara, fulfilling rites prescribed in Islamic tradition.
