Hasan Mahmud claims five-wicket haul to lead Bangladesh attack in Sylhet
Pacer Hasan Mahmud took five wickets on the second morning of the Sylhet Test to drag Bangladesh back into the match after West Indies dominated the opening day.
West Indies had ended the first day at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on 235 for four. By lunch on day two they were 322 for eight, having added 87 runs in 25 overs while losing four wickets in the first session. Hasan claimed three of them and Mehidy Hasan Miraz the other.
Amir Jangoo and Justin Greaves had started the day comfortably, but the new ball changed the picture. In his first over with it, Hasan removed Jangoo and captain Roston Chase off consecutive deliveries. Jangoo was bowled by an excellent delivery after making 133, and Chase edged the next ball to the wicketkeeper.
Hasan briefly threatened a hat-trick in the same over, trapping Joshua Bishop lbw. Bishop reviewed and the decision was overturned, with replays showing the ball had hit the inside edge of the bat before striking the pad. Hasan later returned to dismiss Bishop for his fifth wicket. He had earlier dropped a chance to catch Bishop off his own bowling.
His five victims in the match were Kavem Hodge, Kevin Wickham, Jangoo, Chase and Bishop. He also took five wickets in an innings against Afghanistan last October. It was his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests and his first at home.
At the other end, Greaves reached his third Test fifty. Miraz ended his resistance in the 91st over when Greaves failed to connect properly with a shot and was bowled through the off stump for 51, the eighth West Indies wicket to fall.
Bangladesh had one more moment of relief before the break when the umpire gave Shamar Joseph out lbw, but Joseph overturned the decision on review and the session ended without another wicket.
Bangladesh opener Sadman Islam was injured while fielding. He slipped on the grass while trying to stop a boundary and twisted his left ankle. He received initial treatment on the field and was carried off on a stretcher.
At lunch, Joseph was unbeaten on 16 and Jomel Warrican on nine. Hasan finished with five wickets for 86 runs, Taskin Ahmed took two for 83 and Miraz one for 69.
