Hasan Mahmud credits clarity, execution for historic Australia win

Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud credited disciplined execution and faith in the team’s plans after his match-winning performance helped Bangladesh secure a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in the Darwin Test on Sunday (August 16).

Hasan claimed nine wickets across the two innings, including a career-best six for 97 in Australia’s first innings, to play a decisive role in Bangladesh’s first Test win on Australian soil. His efforts earned him the Player of the Match award.

Speaking after receiving the award, Hasan said Bangladesh had arrived with a clear mindset and remained focused on executing its plans rather than worrying about the result.

“We were prepared from the beginning to give our best. I kept my head clear, trusted the process and focused on execution rather than the result,” Hasan said. “The whole team was ready to fight for five days.”

Bangladesh had studied Australia’s formidable batting lineup extensively before the Test, using video footage and analysis to formulate specific plans for each batter. Hasan said the key was not simply developing those plans but maintaining the discipline to execute them consistently on the field.

Bowling first on Darwin’s grass-covered surface also demanded patience, according to the 26-year-old pacer.

“When you bowl first in these conditions, you need a lot of patience and perseverance,” he said. “For me, the key was to keep hitting the right line and length, ball after ball.”

Hasan’s six-wicket haul helped Bangladesh dismiss Australia for 198 in the first innings before the tourists built a 228-run lead with 426. He then struck three more times in the second innings, working alongside Mehidy Hasan Miraz to keep Australia from setting a challenging target.

Bangladesh eventually needed only 57 runs for victory and completed the chase by nine wickets, securing their first Test win in Australia.

For Hasan, the significance of the victory extended beyond the cricket field. He said seeing his family, friends and people from his hometown celebrate his return to form and the team’s historic achievement made the occasion even more special.

“I know they will celebrate this moment, and that means everything to me,” he said.
