Hazlewood embraces Bangladesh series as fresh challenge

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has described the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh as an exciting opportunity to embrace the unknown, saying the limited history between the two sides makes the contest particularly intriguing.

Speaking on The Unplayable Podcast, Hazlewood admitted that Australia head into the series with several uncertainties, including the nature of the pitches, playing conditions and Bangladesh's approach. He said while video analysis provides useful insights, Test cricket often demands tactical adjustments on the field, which he considers one of the format's greatest appeals.

Hazlewood has played just one Test against Bangladesh — in Mirpur in 2017 — where he finished without a wicket. Most members of Australia's current squad also have limited experience against the Tigers in the longest format.

Former Australia pacer Kane Richardson believes the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin is unlikely to produce the traditional fast and bouncy Australian conditions. Instead, he expects a slower surface with lower bounce, potentially offering conditions closer to those typically found in Bangladesh.

Hazlewood said he prefers keeping his plans simple in Test cricket, stressing that consistent execution is more important than overcomplicating tactics. He added that the five-day format allows bowlers time to adapt to changing conditions — a luxury not available in T20 cricket.

The first Test between Bangladesh and Australia begins on August 13 in Darwin. Bangladesh are currently fine-tuning their preparations in a three-day warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI.
