Heavy rains trigger landslides killed 16 in China

At least 16 people have been killed by mudslides and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in China’s eastern Jiangxi province, state media reported on Thursday (September 10).

The incidents occurred in Suichuan County, according to Xinhua News Agency, as the region grapples with another round of severe weather following a series of similar natural disasters across parts of the country in recent months.

China Central Television (CCTV) reported that landslides in Gaoping town in Suichuan claimed up to 13 lives. Two other bodies were recovered in Xuan town and another in Tanghu town, bringing the confirmed death toll to 16.

More than 18,000 residents had been evacuated to safer areas in Suichuan County by Wednesday afternoon as authorities stepped up emergency measures to deal with the impact of the heavy rain and landslides.

Rescue and recovery operations are continuing, with authorities assessing damage and monitoring areas at risk of further landslides.
