A helicopter crash in New York’s Hudson River claimed the lives of six people, including three children.

Officials said the helicopter lost control right after turning near the George Washington Bridge while heading along the coast of New Jersey. It had taken off from Manhattan's Skyport at around 3.00pm local time on Thursday (April 10).

According to a BBC report, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said five of the people who died were members of the same family. They were Spanish citizens. The other person who died was the pilot.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, “The names of the victims will not be released until their families are notified.” The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

New York Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker said, “The first report of the crash came at 3:17 PM. As soon as the news came in, rescue boats were launched.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the crash involved a two-blade Bell 206 helicopter, and the investigation will be led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
