Hezbollah rejects US-mediated ceasefire proposal

Hezbollah on Thursday (June 4) flatly rejected a US-mediated ceasefire framework with Israel, with the group's leader Naim Qassem declaring that accepting the proposed terms would amount to capitulation and serve Israel's strategic objectives.

Qassem, who was not party to the negotiations, said the proposed agreement would compel Hezbollah to cease hostilities and withdraw from the southern border — an outcome he described as surrender in all but name. "This would only realise Israel's goals," he said in a televised address. "A ceasefire must be for both sides — otherwise it is not a ceasefire. It is surrender."

The proposal, outlined in a joint statement from the US State Department, stipulates that the deal would only take effect upon a complete cessation of hostilities by Hezbollah. It envisions a roughly 30-kilometre buffer zone between the Israeli border and the Litani River, from which Hezbollah fighters would be excluded.

A US-supported "pilot security zone" would also be established within Lebanon, to be controlled exclusively by the Lebanese Armed Forces, with no presence of non-state armed actors.

The framework does not include detailed maps or a concrete implementation roadmap — an absence critics say reflects its fundamental fragility. Israeli ground forces currently occupy portions of the designated zone.

On Monday, both sides had announced a partial ceasefire under which Israel agreed to halt airstrikes on Beirut in exchange for Hezbollah suspending attacks on Israeli territory. Despite that agreement, multiple Israeli airstrikes were reported across southern Lebanon on Thursday, deepening doubts about the viability of any deal.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz affirmed that military operations would continue regardless of diplomatic progress.

Analysts say the Lebanese government may have anticipated Hezbollah's eventual acquiescence to the talks, but the group remains unwilling to cede its identity as the principal force of resistance in the region.

Representatives of both countries are scheduled to meet again on June 22, where a comprehensive, long-term agreement is expected to be on the table.

Key terms of the proposed deal:

Hezbollah must fully cease hostilities for the agreement to activate

~30 km buffer zone between Israeli border and Litani River, cleared of Hezbollah fighters

US-backed "pilot zone" under exclusive Lebanese army control

Next round of talks scheduled for June 22
