A devastating fire at a high-rise residential complex in Hong Kong has left at least 44 people dead, with the toll expected to rise.

The blaze broke out at the Wang Fuk Court complex in the Tai Po district on Wednesday (November 26).

According to AFP, the fire initially erupted on bamboo scaffolding attached to three of the buildings and quickly spread to multiple sections of the eight-block complex, which houses nearly 2,000 flats.

BBC reports that 40 victims died at the scene, while four others died in hospital. Another 45 people are receiving treatment for severe burns and injuries. The fire burned intensely for nearly 15 hours, leaving widespread destruction.

Earlier updates had reported 36 deaths and 279 missing, raising fears of further casualties.

Police have arrested three officials of a construction company, including two directors and a consultant.

Authorities said the fire spread “abnormally fast,” worsened by flammable materials such as polystyrene and by unsafe installations, including nets, canvas sheets, and plastic coverings used inside the building.
