Houthi attack in Saudi Arabia

Houthi rebels have carried out an attack in Saudi Arabia's southern Jazan province. Two people were injured and several buildings, including a mosque, were damaged, Saudi Civil Defence said.

Several vehicles were also damaged in the attack carried out in the Al-Tuwal area of Jazan on Saturday. A spokesperson for Saudi Civil Defence described the attack on civilian installations as a "grave violation of international law". He said emergency rescue operations began after the attack.

The Houthis claimed their attack targeted a Saudi military base in Sharurah in the southern Najran province.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been carrying out a series of missile and drone attacks in southern Saudi Arabia over the past few days. This has reignited the situation in Yemen, raising fears of deepening the regional crisis.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Houthis attacked civilian and economic installations in Saudi Arabia's Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran cities. At least 73 people, including women and children, were injured in those attacks.

After nearly four years of relative calm under UN mediation, conflict resumed in Yemen last July. Reports state that Houthi fighters currently control vast areas of Yemen's Red Sea coast and have reportedly seized the strategic port city of Mokha.

On the other hand, Yemeni government forces have become newly embroiled in conflict in the Al-Jawf, Marib and Al-Bayda regions.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and local officials, more than 500 people have been killed in this conflict so far. Several thousand people have been forced to leave their homes and take shelter elsewhere.

This month, an emergency meeting was held at the UN Security Council on the Yemen crisis. At the meeting, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg warned that Yemen is heading towards "a new and more dangerous chapter of the war".
