From celebrities to ordinary users, incidents of X (formerly Twitter) account hacking are no longer rare. With such cases increasing in recent times, cyber security experts are urging users to remain vigilant.

The most common hacking method is phishing, where hackers lure users into clicking fake or attractive links and steal login credentials. If an account is suddenly compromised, users should first consider whether they recently clicked on any suspicious or tempting links.

According to business magazine Forbes, other major causes of hacking include weak passwords, using unsecured networks leading to man-in-the-middle attacks, and malware infections that steal data through keylogging software.

Common signs of hacked X account
One of the earliest signs of hacking is unauthorised tweets or posts. Hackers often post spam or phishing links promoting financial schemes, Bitcoin scams, diet products, or fake giveaways.

Unusual account behaviour may also indicate hacking. Hackers may send direct messages, alter follower or following lists, or authorise third-party apps without the user’s knowledge.

X sends alert emails if it detects suspicious activity or unauthorised login attempts. Ignoring such emails can be risky.

Sudden password failure or receiving password reset notifications without initiating them is another clear warning sign. In some cases, hackers may also cause financial damage through identity theft, including unauthorised bank or credit card charges, suspicious crypto transactions, or unknown emails.

What to do immediately if X account is hacked?

If hacking is suspected, immediate action is crucial. Experts advise attempting to log in using another device or a secure internet connection. If access is possible, the password should be changed immediately to a strong, unique one not used elsewhere.

Users should then verify whether the linked email address and phone number are correct, as hackers often change these details. From Settings → Security and account access → Apps and sessions, all suspicious devices and third-party apps should be removed.

To enhance security, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) is strongly recommended. App-based 2FA is considered more secure than SMS-based methods.

What if Login is not possible?

If access cannot be restored, users should report the issue through X’s official Account Recovery form, stating that the account has been hacked and login credentials changed. The email address originally used to register the account must be provided.

If the same password was used for email, Facebook, Instagram, or other online services, those passwords should also be changed immediately.

How long does account recovery take?

Recovery time depends on the complexity of the issue and the accuracy of the information provided. In simple cases where only the password was changed and the email remains accessible, accounts can be recovered within minutes or hours.

In moderately complex cases—such as when the email or phone number has been changed—recovery typically takes two to seven working days. In more complex situations involving full data changes, additional verification, or temporary suspension, recovery may take one to three weeks.

According to Forbes, prompt action and responsible online habits significantly reduce the risk of X account hacking and help prevent potential financial losses.
