I don't know how this rule was made: Swiss coach rages after red card drama

Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin has strongly criticised the controversial VAR decision that led to Breel Embolo's dismissal, insisting the turning point cost his side a place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals.

The Swiss looked on course to push world champions Argentina all the way after levelling the score at 1-1 and taking control of the contest. But the match swung dramatically in the 72nd minute, when Embolo was shown a second yellow card following a VAR review.

Referee João Pinheiro initially booked Argentina's Leandro Paredes after the collision. However, after a VAR intervention, the decision was overturned, Paredes' yellow card was rescinded, and Embolo was instead booked for simulation—resulting in his dismissal.

Reduced to 10 men, Switzerland defended resolutely for much of extra time before conceding twice, with Julián Álvarez breaking the deadlock in the 112th minute and Lautaro Martínez sealing Argentina's 3-1 victory moments before the final whistle.

"We had the momentum and were preparing to make more attacking substitutions. Then came the red card," Yakin said after the match.

"I don't know how this rule was made. It wasn't our day, but I'm incredibly proud of my players and my coaching staff. Against the world champions, I thought we were the better team."

Under current IFAB Laws of the Game, VAR was able to review the incident because the referee had already issued a yellow card. After reassessing the footage, the booking was transferred to Embolo for simulation, triggering his second caution and dismissal.

Embolo became only the fourth player since 1966 to be sent off for a second yellow card due to simulation at a World Cup, and the first since Asamoah Gyan in 2006.

Switzerland's defeat also ended their best World Cup run since 1954, falling just one win short of a historic first-ever semi-final appearance.
