The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved a major overhaul of playing conditions, introducing 73 rule changes aimed at modernising Test, ODI and T20 cricket.

The decisions were taken at a high-level board meeting in Ahmedabad, India, and formally announced on Monday (June 1).

The ICC said the changes, developed as part of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) law revisions, will come into effect from October 1, 2026.

Among the key proposals is a move to allow pink-ball play in Test matches by mutual consent of both teams, intended to reduce interruptions caused by poor light and improve continuity in multi-day cricket.

The ICC has also endorsed the use of Hawk-Eye technology for on-field assessment of bowling actions, allowing umpires to review potential illegal actions with greater precision during matches.

In ODI cricket, coaches may be allowed to enter the field during drinks breaks while wearing team kits, a move designed to enhance tactical communication with players.

T20 cricket will also see a reduced innings break, cut from 20 minutes to 15 minutes, as part of efforts to further increase the pace and commercial appeal of the format. Coaches will also be permitted to engage directly with players during official drinks breaks.

The ICC said the reforms are designed to make cricket more dynamic, technology-driven and viewer-friendly across all formats.

In a separate decision, the ICC also agreed that India’s matches in the 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup in Pakistan will be held at a neutral venue, citing political and bilateral considerations.
