The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed the authenticity of a widely circulated image showing an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus Christ with a hammer in southern Lebanon, and said disciplinary action will be taken against those involved.

In a statement issued early Monday (April 20), IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said the incident will be investigated and appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings.

The military said initial review indicates the soldier seen in the image was operating in southern Lebanon during an active mission.

The IDF stressed that it views the incident “with utmost seriousness” and said the conduct does not align with the values expected of its personnel.

According to Israeli media reports, including The Times of Israel, the image was taken in the Christian-majority village of Debel in southern Lebanon, where IDF forces were reportedly conducting operations against Hezbollah positions.

The IDF Northern Command has launched a formal investigation into the incident. The military also said it intends to restore the damaged statue to its original location.

The image surfaced on social media following a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, amid ongoing allegations of property damage and looting by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions between Israel and Christian leaders in Jerusalem, further intensifying regional and religious sensitivities.
