Imam arrested for allegedly raping seven-year-old child in Kishoreganj mosque

Police have arrested an imam of a mosque in Kuliarchar upazila, Kishoreganj, on charges of raping a seven-year-old child.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, May 24, in the Ramdi union of the upazila, according to Kuliarchar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Arif.

The arrested imam, Mahbub, also known as Mahbubullah, 23, is a resident of Khalishapur area in East Dhala upazila, Netrokona. He had started his duties at the mosque in Ramdi union about a month ago.

According to the case statement, the child went to the mosque on Sunday afternoon to bring food for the imam. It was there that she was allegedly raped.

When the incident came to light, locals detained the imam and informed police. Police later arrived at the scene and took him into custody.

The OC said the child's mother has filed a case. The child has been sent to the district sadar hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Kuliarchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Yasin Khandaker said the incident would be thoroughly investigated, and the maximum punishment under the law would be ensured if the allegation is proven.
