Indefinite BPL suspension possible amid player protests
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) may be suspended indefinitely if players do not return to the field today, a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director told reporters on Thursday (January 15).
The standoff follows the removal of BCB director M Nazmul Islam from his post as Finance Committee chairman in response to players’ demands. Despite this move, players have yet to resume play, prompting the board to take a firm stance.
In an official statement, the BCB said the decision aims to safeguard the board’s functioning and interests. Nazmul Islam’s removal was carried out under the president’s powers outlined in Article 31 of the BCB constitution. Until a new appointment is made, BCB President Aminul Islam will serve as acting chairman of the Finance Committee.
The board reiterated that players’ interests, respect, and dignity remain its top priority and urged cricketers to maintain professionalism and responsibility during this crisis to ensure participation in the BPL continues.
Meanwhile, the first match of the Dhaka leg, scheduled for 1:00 pm, could not take place as no team appeared on the field. Later, the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWA) held a press conference at the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka, reiterating that players will not return to play until their demands are fully met.
