India has created history once again in the T20 World Cup. By defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, they have won the T20 World Cup for the second consecutive time. With this victory, India has achieved the feat of becoming the first team in the history of the men's T20 World Cup to successfully defend their title.
After winning the toss and batting first in the final, India started somewhat slowly but quickly took control of the match. Opener Sanju Samson played a brilliant innings, scoring 89 runs off 46 balls, his knock featuring multiple exquisite boundaries and sixes. The other opener, Abhishek Sharma, played a blistering innings of 52 runs off just 21 balls. Ishan Kishan also played a crucial role in boosting the team's score with 54 runs off 25 balls. Thanks to half-centuries from these three top-order batsmen, India posted a massive total of 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.
For New Zealand, Jimmy Neesham created some pressure by taking three wickets in one over, but a quick-fire 24 runs by Shivam Dube towards the end further strengthened India's score.
Chasing a target of 256 runs, New Zealand came under pressure from the start. Although Tim Seifert played a fighting innings of 52 runs off 26 balls, the team could not get back into the match due to regular loss of wickets. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah delivered a superb bowling performance, taking 4 wickets and dismantling the New Zealand batting line-up. Ultimately, New Zealand were all out for 159 runs in 19 overs.
With this victory, India set a record of winning three consecutive major white-ball tournaments – the 2026 and 2024 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy. On the other hand, New Zealand had to settle for being runners-up once again after losing a World Cup final.
