India closely monitoring Bangladesh's talks with China: Randhir Jaiswal

India is closely monitoring Bangladesh's discussions with Beijing regarding the potential acquisition of J-10CE multi-role fighter jets from China and the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh (CMBC) economic corridor, the country's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said.

He made the remarks during the weekly press briefing of India's Ministry of External Affairs on Friday, July 3.

Responding to separate questions on Bangladesh Prime Minister's recent China visit, the possibility of acquiring J-10CE fighter jets and the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor, Jaiswal said, "We closely monitor all such developments in our region and take appropriate measures as required."

Regarding the integrated management and restoration project of the Teesta river, the Indian spokesperson said India's position on the project has already been conveyed to Bangladesh.

He said India's development cooperation with Bangladesh is based on a mutually agreed roadmap and is reviewed regularly. India will also determine its policy taking into account all relevant strategic and developmental developments in Bangladesh.

During Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to China, the Teesta Barrage Master Plan was declared a 'national priority' and the project was pledged to be implemented at any cost. At the same time, Bangladesh and China also agreed to increase cooperation on trans-boundary river management, including the Teesta.

However, Chinese officials have said their cooperation with Bangladesh is not aimed at any third country.

During the briefing, Jaiswal also reiterated India's position on the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.

He said the treaty remains suspended because of Pakistan's support for cross-border terrorism. India's position remains unchanged, and Pakistan must credibly and irrevocably abandon its support for cross-border terrorism, he added.
