Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed deep concern over the recent attack on the historic Kacharibari residence of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj.

During a weekly press briefing in New Delhi on Thursday (June 12), Jaiswal urged the Bangladesh government to take decisive action against those responsible calling it part of "A worrying trend targeting symbols of communal harmony in Bangladesh."

"Such incidents are deeply saddening and are occurring repeatedly," Jaiswal said. "We strongly condemn this violent attack, which runs counter to the inclusive philosophy and teachings of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Extremist elements are attempting to destroy historical structures that represent tolerance and cultural unity."

"We urge the Bangladesh government to take strict action against the terrorists involved in this incident," Jaiswal added.

The attack on Tagore’s Kacharibari – a residence where the poet spent significant time and produced important literary work – has drawn widespread condemnation in Bangladesh, with cultural figures and civil society groups calling for justice and increased protection of heritage sites.

The MEA briefing also touched on other Bangladesh-related developments. When asked about recent remarks made in London by Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, who reportedly said he warned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political rhetoric, Jaiswal responded diplomatically. "India seeks to maintain positive and constructive relations with Bangladesh. This aspiration is shared by the people of both countries," he said.

On speculation regarding the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, to New Delhi, Jaiswal stated that the ministry had no information and could not confirm the report.
