India named host of 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy

India has got the opportunity to host the first-ever ICC Women’s Champions Trophy. The country has been given the responsibility of organizing next year’s T20 tournament after leaving behind Bangladesh and South Africa in the race to become the host.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed India’s name as the host of the 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy in a statement on Wednesday (September 2). The six-team competition will be held in Mumbai and Vadodara from February 14 to 28 next year. The matches will be played at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and Vadodara International Cricket Stadium.

Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka will take part in the tournament. The teams have qualified for the competition on the basis of the ICC Women’s T20 rankings. In the league stage each team will play against one another. After that the top two teams in the points table will face each other in the final. The title clash will be held on February 28.

Initially there was a plan to host the inaugural edition of the Women’s Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka. However, uncertainty arose over organizing the tournament there as the renovation work prescribed by the ICC was not completed on time. Later the ICC started the process considering Bangladesh, India and South Africa as alternative hosts.

After reviewing the prescribed criteria for host selection, India was chosen. The matter was finalised through the approval of the ICC Board on September 2.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the Women’s Champions Trophy will mark the beginning of a new chapter in women’s cricket. With the participation of the world’s best teams, the competition will not only gift spectators enjoyable cricket but the fight to move up in the rankings will also become more intense.
