Indian teen arrested for killing mother, brother using ChatGPT in Massachusetts

A 17-year-old Indian-American teenager has been arrested and charged with killing his mother and 14-year-old brother at their family home in Acton, Massachusetts, with investigators saying he had recently used the internet and the AI chatbot ChatGPT to explore fictional ideas and theories about killing his family.

The suspect, identified as Arjun Aravind, was taken into custody early Wednesday (August 12) after an overnight search. He faces murder charges in the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his younger brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14, as well as several other charges, according to authorities.

Police allege that Arjun attacked his mother and brother at their home on Martha Lane on Tuesday before fleeing in his mother's green Honda Accord.

The case came to light after a tutor arrived at the house shortly after 6:30 p.m. for a scheduled lesson but was unable to enter. The tutor contacted Arjun's father, who also failed to reach family members and subsequently asked Acton police to check on them.

Officers who arrived at the home found the two victims dead. Sudha was found in the basement, while Siddharth was found on the first floor. Both had suffered severe injuries, authorities said.

The chief medical examiner's office has yet to determine the precise cause and manner of death. Investigators have also not confirmed what weapon, if any, was used in the killings.

Arjun disappeared from the area after the incident, along with his mother's car. Authorities launched a search and warned law enforcement agencies and the public to remain alert.

He was found inside the missing vehicle at a parking lot in Wayland, Massachusetts, early Wednesday and was taken into custody without incident.

The Middlesex County District Attorney's Office said investigators subsequently uncovered information about what it described as troubling recent behavior by Arjun. According to the office, he had used the internet and an AI chatbot to explore fictional thoughts and theories about killing members of his family.

Investigators also said he had used the chatbot to develop stories and characters in the Gothic fiction genre and to ask various questions. The authorities' statements do not establish that ChatGPT caused or directly facilitated the killings.

Arjun, a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, was initially expected to appear in Lowell Juvenile Court. However, because the juvenile court does not have jurisdiction over murder charges, the case is expected to be transferred to Concord District Court.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to examine the circumstances, motive and possible weapon involved in the killings.
