Infantino loses support of Wales FA amid FIFA investment plan fallout

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure over his leadership of international football. The Football Association of Wales has announced its withdrawal of support for his candidature for the 2027-2031 term as FIFA president. This marks the first formal vote of no confidence against Infantino by any national football association.

Recently, FIFA had planned to form a new entity to manage the commercial rights of its main competitions, including the World Cup, and to raise $4.2 billion by selling a 20 percent stake in that entity to private investors . However, the organisation was forced to scrap the plan following fierce opposition from member associations and various stakeholders. Questions over Infantino's leadership have intensified since then .

The Football Association of Wales stated in a statement that they have lost faith in Infantino due to consistent deficiencies in good governance, decision-making processes, leadership, values, stakeholder relations and communication. According to the association, he has failed to prioritise the best interests of football, which is unacceptable .

Earlier, European football's governing body UEFA and Concacaf, which oversees football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, had also expressed dissatisfaction with Infantino's leadership . However, Wales is the first national football association to publicly announce the withdrawal of support for his re-election.

Meanwhile, UEFA has sent a letter to FIFA warning of potential legal action. The letter called for no documents or digital information related to the matter to be destroyed, deleted or altered. Although UEFA has not yet confirmed the veracity of various reports about legal action against FIFA, the threat itself adds to the pressure on Infantino.

Infantino became FIFA president in 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter. He was subsequently re-elected twice unopposed. In April this year, he expressed his intention to stand for a fourth term . Until recently, his re-election seemed almost certain.

However, the recent controversy and growing discontent among member associations have begun to change the situation. Analysts believe that Infantino now faces significantly greater political and diplomatic challenges ahead of the FIFA Congress to be held in Morocco next March .
