International Coffee Day is being observed on October 1, celebrating one of the world’s most popular beverages and recognising the millions of farmers, workers, producers, traders and others whose efforts bring coffee from farms to consumers.

The International Coffee Organization (ICO) designated October 1 as International Coffee Day in 2014, with the first official observance held in Italy in 2015. The day is now marked in coffee-producing and consuming countries around the world through various events and campaigns.

For many people, coffee is part of the daily routine—whether it is the first cup of the morning, a break during a busy workday or a drink shared during an evening conversation. Beyond its distinctive aroma and taste, coffee contains caffeine and antioxidants, and research has linked moderate consumption with several potential health benefits.

However, the effects of coffee depend on how much is consumed and what is added to it. Black or unsweetened coffee generally contains fewer calories than drinks loaded with sugar, cream or other high-calorie ingredients. Excessive caffeine intake, meanwhile, can cause sleep problems, restlessness, anxiety and an increased heart rate.

Experts advise people to consider both quantity and individual health conditions when consuming coffee. Those who are particularly sensitive to caffeine or have certain medical conditions may need to limit their intake.

Brazil remains the world’s largest coffee producer, accounting for a substantial share of global supply. Vietnam ranks second and produces around one-fifth of the world’s coffee, while Colombia, Indonesia and Ethiopia are also major producers.

International Coffee Day therefore goes beyond celebrating a beloved beverage. It is also an opportunity to recognise the vast global workforce behind every cup—and the agricultural, economic and social connections that make coffee a daily ritual for millions of people.
