International community failed on Palestine issue: Irish PM

Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin has commented that the international community has failed for the Palestinians. In the speech given at the session of the United Nations General Assembly he said the ongoing violence and expansion of Israeli settlements are further damaging the possibility of lasting peace. Turkey’s media TRT World has reported this news.

Micheál Martin gave a speech addressing world leaders at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday. He said the international law-based system is currently under severe pressure. He also mentioned the denial of basic human rights as one of the biggest challenges of the present time.

On the Palestine context Micheál Martin said, “As the collective international community we have failed in Palestine.” He made this comment highlighting the prolonged suffering of the civilians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The Irish Prime Minister welcomed the first phase of the Gaza peace plan agreed between Israel and Hamas last October. However, he commented that no fundamental change has come in the situation of Gaza even after this initiative.

Micheál Martin also raised the issues of the continuation of Israeli attacks, restrictions on the entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza and the suffering of the civilians in the speech. At the same time reaffirming Ireland’s support for the International Criminal Court he said there can be no impunity in the case of war crimes.

He also called for the withdrawal of the measures taken with the aim of weakening the activities of the International Criminal Court. The issue of the responsibility of the international community for the incidents that took place in Gaza and the future consequences also received importance in his statement.

At this time discussion is ongoing at the session of the United Nations General Assembly on Gaza, the statehood of Palestine and the future of the two-state-based solution. The Secretary-General of the United Nations has also called for stopping the war in Gaza, increasing humanitarian assistance and following international law.

Micheál Martin also warned that the international community will ultimately have to face the responsibility and consequences of what has happened in Gaza. In his opinion the moral and political impacts of these incidents will be long-lasting.
