Internet cut off in Manipur for five days amid renewed violence
In Manipur, India, the state government has ordered a five-day internet shutdown in Ukhrul district following a surge in communal clashes.
The move aims to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent further escalation.
Violence erupted Tuesday (February 10) in Litan and surrounding villages, days after at least 25 homes were set ablaze on February 8.
Police reported incidents of arson and gunfire between neighbouring communities, deepening tensions in the region.
Residents, fearing further attacks, began evacuating their homes on Monday. The State Home Department implemented the internet blackout from 11:30am Tuesday, citing concerns that social media posts, images, and videos could incite more violence.
An indefinite curfew has also been imposed by the district magistrate, and both state and central security forces have been deployed to restore order. Authorities highlighted rising tensions between the Tangkhul and Kuki communities, warning of potential threats to lives and property.
Efforts to ease the conflict included a community leaders’ meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Loshi Dikho on Monday, aimed at dialogue and de-escalation.
The shutdown in Manipur reflects a growing trend in South Asia where governments temporarily restrict internet access during periods of civil unrest to maintain public order.
