Iran assured it will not develop nuclear weapons: Trump
US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons, following reports of a new and more stringent peace proposal sent by Washington to Tehran.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Saturday night (May 30), Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons remains his top priority.
“The only guarantee I needed was that there would be no nuclear weapons. They agreed to that. It was very interesting,” Trump said.
Trump has consistently outlined two key objectives in any potential deal with Tehran: halting Iran’s nuclear weapons programme and ensuring the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
However, Iranian officials have previously expressed skepticism over US claims and negotiating positions.
Analysts say major differences between the two sides persist, particularly on core security and regional issues.
Despite weeks of diplomatic exchanges, sharp rhetoric, and periodic military tensions, there has been limited tangible progress toward a formal agreement. Observers note that the latest US proposal, reportedly containing additional conditions, could further delay negotiations.
According to separate reports by The New York Times and Axios, the Trump administration has submitted a revised framework for Iran’s consideration, introducing tougher terms for any potential deal. The details of those conditions have not yet been made public.
