Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it destroyed several US warplanes and refuelling aircraft stationed in Jordan using missiles and drone strikes. The claim could not be independently verified.

The IRGC said in a statement that the attacks on US military targets in Jordan were in retaliation for overnight US strikes on Iranian installations. They claimed several warplanes and refuelling aircraft were destroyed and others seriously damaged.

Jordan's army, however, said it intercepted three missiles launched by Iran and that there were no casualties or damage.

The IRGC also claimed to have struck the US special operations command centre at Al-Tanf in Syria. There was no immediate comment from Syria or the US military.

Indian media outlet NDTV reported that it could not independently verify the IRGC's claims. The US military had earlier announced that it had completed the withdrawal of its troops from the Al-Tanf base on the Syria-Jordan-Iraq border in February this year.

Explosions were also heard in Erbil and Sulaimaniyah in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, where local sources said air defences attempted to intercept missiles.

An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed the target was the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala, with at least nine killed and several wounded. Iran has not formally claimed responsibility for the attack.

Since the Iran-US interim ceasefire brokered by Pakistan collapsed last month, the two sides have continued to trade strikes in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
