Tensions have been reignited over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most crucial waterways for global trade. Iran's Deputy Parliament Speaker Haji Babaei has claimed that the strait is completely under Iran's control and that a toll must be paid for passage—which must be paid in the Iranian currency, the riyal.

According to a BBC report citing Iran's state-run Mehr News Agency, Babaei further stated that the Strait of Hormuz is a red line for Tehran, and its security and control rest entirely with Iran.

Approximately 20 per cent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transported through this strait, making it critically important for global energy and the economy.

Meanwhile, after lengthy talks with Iran in Pakistan, US Vice President JD Vance made no comment regarding Hormuz, although it is understood to have been a major issue in the discussions. Ensuring safe navigation through the strait is a key part of the conditional ceasefire currently in place between the United States and Iran.

On the other hand, US President Donald Trump has claimed the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened soon. The US Central Command has said its navy has sent two destroyers through the strait and is working on a mission to clear the sea lanes of mines.

However, Iran has denied this claim, stating that no US ships have passed through the strait. At the same time, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has warned that any attempt by military vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz will be met with a firm response.
