Iran has officially confirmed the death of Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the top commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy.

In a statement published by Iranian media on Monday, March 30, the IRGC said he was killed in an Israeli airstrike last Thursday.

Alireza Tangsiri was an experienced and hardline military leader of the IRGC. For a long time, he played a key role in shaping Iran's naval defence and strategy. His death is seen as a major blow to Iran's military leadership amid the ongoing war.

According to the US Treasury Department, sanctions were imposed on him twice, in 2019 and 2023. He oversaw the testing of cruise missiles for the IRGC Navy and was a member of the board of directors of a drone technology-related institution.

Under his leadership, Iran established a strong presence in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which approximately 20 per cent of global oil supply passes. Shipping through this route has also been severely disrupted amid recent tensions.

Analysts say his absence could temporarily affect Iran's naval operations in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz region. However, the IRGC has stated that the death of their top commander will not be in vain and that they will continue their resistance along the path he showed.

The conflict between Iran and Israel has now reached its peak, extending to sea routes as well as air and land. Following this attack, tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv have further escalated.

Iran has already announced state mourning and has warned of revenge for this killing.
