Iran has destroyed a crucial $300 million radar system, vital for operating the United States' missile defence network in the Gulf region, through a missile strike. The attack is believed to potentially weaken the regional capability to counter future strikes.

Bloomberg reported the information on Saturday, citing US officials.

According to the report, satellite images analysed by CNN show that the AN/TPY-2 radar manufactured by RTX Corporation, used in the US THAAD missile defence system, along with supporting equipment including a battery, was destroyed at Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti Airbase early in the war.

A US official later confirmed the destruction of the equipment. Bloomberg stated that the United States possesses a total of eight THAAD missile defence systems worldwide, including those in South Korea and Guam.

According to data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, each battery costs approximately one billion dollars, with around $300 million spent on the radar alone.

In a statement, the IRGC said the attack damaged the US terrorists' air warfare centre, satellite communication centre, early warning radar, and fire control radar.

It is noteworthy that after the US and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28, killing the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, war spread across the Middle East. Since then, Iran has been retaliating with drone and missile strikes on Israeli installations and those associated with US interests in the region.
