Iran executes 2 Islamic State members
Iran has executed two members of the Islamic State (IS) group convicted of waging an armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic, state television reported on Tuesday (July 14).
The two men who were executed have been identified as Mohieddin Abdullahi and Hossein Palani. The state television report said they were members of an IS cell formed after IS's regional defeat in Iraq and Syria. The cell was allegedly planning attacks inside Iran.
According to the report, Iranian security forces identified the cell's location in the Bamo Mountains area near the Iraqi border before it could be implemented. Later, several militants were killed and others were arrested in a raid.
Three members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed in the raid. Authorities said weapons, ammunition and other military equipment were seized from the scene.
The two men were later convicted of armed rebellion. The Supreme Court of Iran upheld the verdict and they were executed by hanging. However, the country's judiciary has not released any information about where the executions took place.
