Iran fires ballistic missiles at US-UK base in Indian Ocean

Iran launched at least two medium-range ballistic missiles targeting the joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean, reports The Wall Street Journal.

One missile reportedly went off course mid-air due to a technical malfunction, while the other was intercepted and destroyed by a US warship’s missile defense system.

Reuters reported that requests for comment sent to the White House, the British Embassy in Washington, and the UK Ministry of Defense were not immediately answered.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the strike demonstrates that Iran’s missile range capability exceeds previous claims, as Diego Garcia is located nearly 4,000 kilometers from Iran.

Last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had stated that Iran deliberately limited its missile range to within 2,000 kilometers.
