Iran hails Spain's World Cup win as victory for freedom-loving people

Iran has congratulated Spain on winning their second World Cup title. In a statement on Monday, Tehran said Spain's victory has delighted freedom-loving people worldwide who are opposed to the United States and Israel.

Spain's government and their national football team had recently garnered massive support on social media worldwide for their strong condemnation of Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip and criticism of the conflict against Iran. For months, Spain had also opposed US strikes against Iran.

On the other hand, Argentine President Javier Milei has openly supported Israeli policies. Many Israeli politicians and supporters had also sided with Argentina. Spain won the World Cup by beating Argentina 1-0 in New York–New Jersey on Sunday.

Following the victory, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf told the state-run news agency IRNA, "The players' stance in support of Palestinians and Spain's support for Iran proves that freedom and self-respect are among the characteristics of that wise and honourable nation."

Qalibaf added, "This victory has not only touched the hearts of the people of Spain but has also delighted the hearts of many free, sovereign and justice-seeking people around the world."

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei had also expressed support for Spain, saying, "Spain's overall stance against aggression, genocide and oppression in recent months, as well as the conduct of their national football team, has been highly commendable and valuable."
