Iran hit back after an early blow to hold Egypt 1-1

Iran staged an early comeback to level the score against Egypt in a crucial Group G clash at the FIFA World Cup, keeping their knockout hopes firmly alive after conceding inside the opening five minutes.

Egypt made the perfect start, taking the lead in the fifth minute through Mahmoud Saber, whose clinical finish became the fastest World Cup goal in the nation's history. Buoyed by the early breakthrough, the Pharaohs dominated possession and dictated the tempo in the opening exchanges.

Iran had a golden opportunity to respond moments later after winning a penalty, but Mehdi Taremi failed to convert from the spot. Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobe produced a superb save to preserve his side's advantage.

The missed penalty, however, did little to derail Iran's momentum. In the 14th minute, Milad Mohammadi's initial effort was only partially stopped by Shobe, allowing Ramin Rezaeian to react quickest and fire home the rebound to restore parity.

The equaliser has transformed the contest into an end-to-end battle, with both sides pushing for a decisive winner that could prove crucial in the race for a place in the Round of 32.

With qualification still hanging in the balance, Egypt are searching for a second goal to strengthen their grip on a knockout berth, while Iran are equally determined to complete the turnaround and secure three vital points.
