Thousands of Iranian citizens have gathered in the capital's central square to pay tribute to Supreme Religious Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Following the announcement of Khamenei's death, mourners arrived at Enghelab Square in Tehran on Sunday. Most were dressed in black, with many seen weeping. Chanting "Death to America" and "Death to Israel", many waved Iranian flags and displayed portraits of Khamenei.

Reports also emerged of thousands gathering in the historic city of Isfahan.

A video broadcast on state media Press TV showed a large gathering at Naqsh-e Jahan Square.

Beyond this, reports of mourning have been received from various cities and streets across Iran.

Iran confirmed on Sunday that Khamenei died following joint US-Israeli strikes on Tehran on Saturday.

State television stations simultaneously broadcast a statement from the country's National Security Council confirming Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's death. A newsreader was seen weeping while delivering the announcement.
