Iran leave out star striker Sardar Azmoun from preliminary World Cup Squad
Iran have omitted veteran striker Sardar Azmoun from their preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Iran Football Federation announced a 30-member provisional squad on Saturday (May 16), with the final 26-man roster set to be confirmed by June 1.
Azmoun’s exclusion has drawn particular attention in Iranian media. Reports, including from Fars News Agency, claimed the 31-year-old forward was dropped over allegations of “disloyal conduct” toward the government.
The controversy reportedly began in March after Azmoun posted photos on Instagram with Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum during a visit to Dubai. Although the images were later deleted, the striker faced criticism on Iranian state television.
Currently playing for UAE club Shabab Al Ahli, Azmoun is regarded as one of Iran’s most successful forwards, having scored 57 goals in 91 appearances for the national team. He also represented Iran in the last two World Cups.
In his absence, much of Iran’s attacking responsibility is expected to fall on Mehdi Taremi, who currently plays for Greek side Olympiacos F.C..
Head coach Amir Ghalenoei said selecting the 30-man squad was “the most difficult decision” of his coaching career and insisted that only technical considerations were taken into account.
Iran will travel to Antalya, Türkiye, on Monday for their World Cup preparations, where they are scheduled to play a friendly match against Gambia on May 29. However, reports indicate that visas for several players and support staff are yet to be issued. FIFA has reportedly assured the federation that the matter will be resolved before the tournament begins.
Placed in Group G, Iran will begin their World Cup campaign against New Zealand national football team in Los Angeles on June 15, before facing Belgium national football team and Egypt national football team in the group stage.
