Iran sets six fresh conditions for reopening Strait of Hormuz

Iran has laid down six conditions for reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, demanding changes in US policy toward Tehran and an end to what it describes as American aggression and pressure.

Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said the waterway would remain closed until Washington changes its approach toward Iran.

In a statement released Saturday (August 8), Zolqadr said the Strait of Hormuz would not be reopened “until America corrects its behaviour.”

His six conditions are:

1. No threats or insults: The United States must not threaten Iran in any form or language or insult what Tehran describes as the sanctity of the Iranian nation.

2. End regional military action: Washington must permanently halt what Iran calls war and aggression against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen and Iraq.

3. Lift the naval blockade: The United States must remove any naval blockade and withdraw its naval and air forces from areas surrounding Iran.

4. Pay war damages: Iran must receive full compensation for losses it says it suffered in two wars that were imposed on the country.

5. Lift sanctions: The United States must remove what Tehran calls unjust and illegal sanctions imposed on the Iranian people.

6. Release Iranian assets: Iranian assets that have been frozen or seized must be released unconditionally.

Zolqadr said the demands reflected the wishes of the Iranian people, claiming they had demonstrated their support over the past 160 days both on the battlefield and in the streets.

He also vowed that Iran’s Supreme National Security Council would not back down, whether the confrontation continues through war or negotiations.

The demands come as Washington signals that it is pursuing multiple avenues to end the conflict. US Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that the administration was seeking the best possible outcome through diplomatic, economic and military means, while warning that the conflict was not yet over.

The White House has not publicly responded to Tehran’s six conditions.
